Frequently Asked Questions about Shredding

What is the difference between a shredder and a granulator?

Heavy-duty “hog” granulators are used to handle large, heavy parts and purgings. Generally, granulators operate at higher speeds with relatively low torque. Shredders, on the other hand, tend to operate at lower speeds (100 to 130 rpm) with high torque that allows them to chew through almost anything.

What is the difference between grind and shred?

The difference is that shred is to cut or tear into narrow and long pieces or strips while grind is to reduce to smaller pieces by crushing with lateral motion.

What is shredding technology?

Shredding technology involves a machine designed, constructed and used for shredding. A shredding machine decreases the size of material by tearing or cutting it into shreds. The shredding procedure creates raw material to be introduced again into the production stage and finished goods. For example, landscape mulch.

What is an industrial shredder for waste management?

A shredder is a machine or equipment used for shredding.  There are shredders designed to support material reduction across a range of recycling applications, including plastic recycling, scrap metal, e-waste recycling, wood recycling, and tire-shredding or recycling.

What are industrial shredders used for?

An industrial shredder is a machine used for reducing the size of all kinds of material. Industrial shredders come in many different sizes and design variations for different applications applications.

How does an industrial shredder work?

When operating an industrial shredder, the material is placed into the hopper, which feeds the material down to the shredder’s one or two rows of sharp, steel knives rollers that are slowly rotating. The rollers grab the material and then pull it through thus allowing the knives to cut large solids into small pieces.

What are industrial shredders made of?

Industrial shredder components include a rotor equipped with very hard knives, counter blades, housing, motor, transmission system, power system and electrical control system. Some examples of materials that are commonly shredded are: tires, metals, car wrecks, wood, plastics, leathers, papers and garbage.

What can an industrial shredder shred?

Industrial shredders can shred almost all of these materials:

    • Paper & cardboard
    • Plastic & Rubber
    • Fabric and carpet
    • Wood, lumber & trees
    • Soft ferrous metals
    • Non-ferrous metals
    • Electronics
    • Wood and lumber
    • Concrete & asphalt.

Where can I buy an industrial shredder?

How does a plastic shredder work?

A plastic shredder is a machine used to cut plastic into smaller pieces for granulation. In the process, large plastic items are fed into the shredder. Moving at a slower speed than a granulator, blades break the plastic down into smaller chunks.

What is a metal shredder called?

A scrap metal shredder, also sometimes referred to as a metal scrap shredder, is a machine used for reducing the size of scrap metal. Scrap metal shredders come in many different variations and sizes.

What are metal shredder teeth made of?

Tooth steel is made of very hard comprised carbide-forming elements. The different combinations offer distinct characteristics. Using this material offers hardness, wear resistance, and toughness.

What does shred mean in scrap metal?

Shredded Scrap — The pieces of ferrous scrap produced by shredders, often from shredded vehicles and appliances. The fist-sized chunks are transportable and saleable as a commodity.

What is metal shredder aggregate?

This shredded material is known as metal shredder aggregate, which is a mixture of recoverable ferrous (iron, steel) and non-ferrous (aluminum, brass, copper) metals and nonrecoverable metal shredder residue.

What else is an industrial shredder called?

Industrial shredders are also known as granulators, grinders, hammer mills, and chippers but their main function remains the same – reducing the size of different materials.
